With so many GPS units out there, how does one decide which is right for their purposes? It is no easy task but I can get you started in the right direction.
First, you have to decide whether you want to use the unit for mobile or boating navigation or for geocaching and hiking.
You should then choose a GPS unit according to what you want it to do. Do you want a GPS unit that has mapping capability and will show your location on roads? You may just want a GPS unit that shows your location and helps you navigate or do geocaching via waypoints.
If the latter is the case, you can find very inexpensive handheld GPS units that will do the job for under $100. Some handheld GPS units such as the Garmin 60csx, 60cx, or the eTrex Legend cx will allow you to navigate while mapping your location on roads and also allow you to navigate off road. The Magellan eXplorist series has a full range of handheld units for both purposes. You can check them out here.
Some handheld GPS units are monochrome and other more expensive GPS units are in color. It is all in what you want or need. I cannot make the decision for you. I can only tell you that I use a Garmin 60cx for my geocaching needs and a Garmin 2820 in my car. For the best prices you can go to gatorgps.com for your mobile and handheld GPS needs.
